About the site
This site explores the intersection of Christianity, personal finance, and life.
In some respects, it’s an odd combination. In modern culture faith and finances both top the lists of “things not to talk about” - let alone both at the same time. Some people assume the two are oil and water. After all, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters…you cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24).
Most sermons that touch on finances are woefully shallow when it comes to how you should practically handle your money. And most serious discussions of personal finance completely ignore any discussion of faith.
But why?
Jesus talked about money all the time. All people – including Christians – have a financial life. In the parable of the talents, Jesus commends the wise servants who generate a 100% return on capital (Matthew 25). He also warns: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
It seems to me that this is a conversation that Christians need to have.
Theos (θεός): the Ancient Greek word for God.
Economics (Οικονομικά): derived from two Greek words which mean “household management”.
Theonomics is therefore my humble pursuit of godly household management. How can we live intentional, effective, and fun lives in service to the Lord? I hope you enjoy and benefit from the discussion.
About me
I am a lifelong Christian and long-term personal finance nerd. At any moment my podcast lineup likely includes a few sermons plus in-depth discussions on topics like asset allocation and safe withdrawal rates.
I graduated magna cum laude from Duke University with a double-major in Economics and Religion (focus on biblical studies). If you were there at the time, you might have seen me studying econometrics in the Divinity School library.
I have an MBA from Northwestern University. But I thought equally hard about going to seminary.
I spent many years working at Bain & Company – a premier strategy consulting firm - where I advised leading corporations and Private Equity companies. Since then, I’ve held executive roles at both large and small companies. Outside of work, I love basketball, being outside, and spending time at church.
I’m married to the most amazing wife and we are blessed to have 3 wonderful kids.
I love Jesus. And I love spreadsheets.
